Hindman Settlement School Family Folk Week Photography Workshop

This is a week long workshop focusing on making you a better photographer thru a combination of better composition and lightening techniques. Students will Students will print and mat two selected images for display. Between the beautiful campus of Hindman Settlement School and and all the activities during Family Folk Week, the photo opportunities are boundless.

Hindman Settlement School's Appalachian Family Folk Week provides an opportunity for individuals and families to share in a week of traditional Appalachian music, dance, crafts, storytelling, instrument playing, photography and special children's activities. The goal is to promote awareness of the region's rich cultural heritage and to pass along traditional skills to younger generations.

Hindman Settlement School is proud to move into its second century of promoting the traditional arts of Eastern Kentucky. The school's founders recognized the craftsmanship that existed in the area and set about to develop markets for crafts.

Malcolm J. Wilson has been shooting photographs for more than 36 years. He is a native of Harlan County, Kentucky and worked as a commercial photographer in Cincinnati for 18 years, serving both urban Appalachian organizations as well as high-profile commercial clients. Arguably, Wilson’s most notable work consists of the hundreds of thousands of his images that document life in Appalachia. From ministers to musicians and miners to moonshiners, Wilson has used his vision and his art to ensure that the story of Appalachia and its people gets told, and told truthfully.
